You know you need to prioritize your health, but with so much conflicting information out there, it’s hard to sort out the snake oil from what actually works.
As you get older, you’re starting to realize just how important men’s health is, and you want to take all the steps you can to keep feeling as young as you did in your early 20’s.
Hello, I’m Dr. Tracy Gapin.
I started this site, Smart Men’s Health, to help men like you sort through the muck out there on the internet and find health solutions that really work.
As a board-certified urologist, I know how confused my patients get by all of the misinformation out there. You may be confused by it, too. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to provide sound, evidence-based strategies to help you maintain your health.
If you’re looking for ways to improve your health that actually work, stick around. You’ve found the right place.
My goal is to always provide quality, actionable men’s health content, based on authoritative medical studies.
I take difficult topics and make them easy to understand, so you can take control of your own health and wellness.
I don’t recommend products because someone’s dad’s brother’s old football coach had good results. I make sure there’s science behind my recommendations because you know it works.
The Smart Men’s Health Difference
There’s a ton of information out there about men’s health.
How do you make sense of it all? What applies to you and what doesn’t? How do you put it into proper context? And, how do you find a source that you can actually trust to tell you the truth?
Here are a few examples:
1. Perhaps you’ve recently heard talk in the media and from some reputable medical journals about the dangers of testosterone therapy. Reportedly, some studies have suggested that testosterone therapy is unsafe.
So does that mean you shouldn’t worry about your testosterone levels? Should you even consider ways to increase your testosterone? Is testosterone therapy really dangerous? What are the effects of testosterone therapy? What are the alternatives?
2. Or how about PSA testing for prostate cancer screening? There have been a lot of news stories about the US Preventative Services Task Force discouraging the use of PSA blood tests and how they can cause more harm than good.
So should you have a PSA test done? What are the risks? How else would you screen for prostate cancer? How does this apply to you?
How do you answer these questions yourself? How do you weed through it all?
I want to make it easy for you to research and understand important health issues such as these that affect you every day. Most importantly, I want to put all of the research, studies, and guides into proper context.
So much of today’s medical care is focused on treating disease. Find a problem, then fix it.
My emphasis with this site is different – I want to direct my efforts on cultivating health and preventing disease before it strikes.
I truly believe this preventative approach can help men live longer and stronger.
What I Stand For
I believe a lot of health problems we see today have their roots in lifestyle behaviors – i.e. poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, too much stress, and lack of sleep. I believe in being active, eating less processed food and refined sugars and drinking more water.
I believe that if something that sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Health is a the long-term process taken in baby steps. There’s no legitimate quick fix.
Supplements can be helpful for many problems – but they are not a cure-all. Healthy behaviors must come first.
Medicine needs more focus on preventative care and overall wellness rather than just treating disease.
Online medical research is good, but context is critical. You have to recognize the source and understand how to apply the information.
Sex is a normal, important part of relationships. It’s okay to talk about it.
Regular sexual activity is an important part of a man’s normal healthy lifestyle. I believe ‘use it or lose it’ definitely applies!
Testosterone levels and overall sexual function can be improved with better nutrition, healthy behaviors and sometimes adding in supplements.
There is rampant abuse of testosterone therapy right now, but I believe it can provide dramatic benefits for those men who truly need it.
Persistence trumps all. You can have whatever you want, including optimal health, if you try hard enough.
You should never take yourself too seriously. It’s okay to be silly and laugh at yourself.
Life is short – don’t take it for granted. We should all enjoy every day. Remember, you don’t get today back!
Be true to yourself. It gets you nowhere pretending to be someone else.
